Coke Jumps into Prebiotic Soda Game
USATue Feb 18 2025
Coca-Cola is diving into the prebiotic soda market with its new brand, Simply Pop. This move comes as soda consumption in the U. S. has been declining over the past 20 years. People are more health-conscious and have more choices, like cold brew, energy drinks, and water. But, there's a new trend: sodas with prebiotics, thanks to companies like Olipop and Poppi. These drinks are gaining popularity, and the market for them has more than doubled from $197 million in 2020 to $440 million in 2024. However, this is still small compared to the overall soda market, which is worth billions.
Simply Pop is starting with fruity flavors like pineapple mango, lime, strawberry, fruit punch, and citrus punch. These drinks have no added sugar and contain 25% to 30% real fruit juice. They also pack vitamin C and zinc for immune support. Plus, they have six grams of prebiotic fiber, which is more than Poppi but less than Olipop.
Prebiotics are fibers that help beneficial bacteria grow in the gut, which is believed to improve digestive health. But, these health benefits are not yet proven. Younger consumers, like millennials and Gen Z, are interested in these products. But, health claims can lead to problems. Poppi is currently in settlement talks over a lawsuit challenging their marketing claims.
Coca-Cola has been eyeing the prebiotic soda category for years. Olipop's CEO mentioned that both Coke and PepsiCo had approached them about a potential sale. Pepsi is also planning to launch its own prebiotic soda in 2025. Coke has the advantage of being a soda giant with a strong marketing and distribution network. However, they have had failures in the past, like pulling Coke Spiced off the shelves in 2024 and slashing distribution of its Aha sparkling water brand in 2023.
