Cold nights ahead: Baton Rouge steps up to help

Baton Rouge, USATue Mar 17 2026
Baton Rouge is getting ready for another stretch of chilly nights, with temperatures predicted to dip into the upper 30s. To keep people safe from the cold, a local shelter will open its doors this Monday and Tuesday evenings. The St. Vincent de Paul shelter, found at 1623 Convention St, will provide overnight beds for up to 135 people—100 in the main shelter and an extra 35 in an emergency space. Check-in starts at 4 p. m. each night, and guests can stay until 8 a. m. the next morning. After that, they can head to the Capital Area Alliance for the Homeless nearby until the shelter reopens for the following night’s stay.
While the shelter offers warmth and a hot meal, the real challenge isn’t just the cold—it’s the wind. A freeze warning is in place from Monday evening through Tuesday morning, with gusty winds expected to make it feel even colder. The good news? Temperatures should start climbing again by the end of the week, giving everyone a break from the harsh conditions. Not everyone has easy access to a warm home, especially during sudden cold snaps. Shelters like this one play a crucial role in preventing health risks for people who might otherwise be left outside. Still, some might wonder why more isn’t done year-round to address homelessness before extreme weather hits.
