Once upon a time, college athletes only dreamt of a degree. Now, with NIL deals, they can earn money too. But for many, like Jonny Bottorff at Northern Arizona University, the real prize is still that diploma. The offensive lineman has scored some extra cash through NIL deals, but it’s not life-changing. He’s more focused on his master’s degree.
Before the Supreme Court’s 2021 ruling, college athletes couldn’t make money from their images or names. Now, top athletes like Jayden Daniels and Angel Reese are cashing in with endorsements. But for most, a degree is the ultimate goal. NCAA data shows over 90% of Division I athletes graduate, often outpacing non-athletes.
Anthony Leal, a basketball player at Indiana University, is returning for a master’s degree, not just for the NIL money. The transfer portal has made it easier for athletes to switch schools, but academics are still crucial. Ray Harrison, a basketball player at Grand Canyon University, found out transferring credits isn’t always smooth.
High school athlete Tavarius Covington dreams of college not just for sports, but for a business degree. He wants to set an example for his younger brother. So, while NIL is shaking things up, the dream of a college degree remains the top goal for many.
