Colombia and Ecuador Probe Border Bombing Claims
Colombia-Ecuador border, ColombiaWed Mar 18 2026
A recent series of explosions at cocaine labs close to the Ecuadorian border took a deadly toll, killing 14 people in January. Colombia’s Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez confirmed the incidents and said that both Colombian and Ecuadorian officials are investigating whether any violation of sovereignty occurred. He added that a bomb found in Colombia likely came from Ecuador’s armed forces.
Earlier this week, Colombian President Gustavo Petro claimed that Ecuador had bombed Colombian territory, resulting in 27 charred bodies. However, he offered no concrete evidence to back up the claim.
In response, Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa denied any wrongdoing. He said that his country targeted drug traffickers within its own borders and that the sites were hideouts used by narco‑terrorist groups, mainly of Colombian origin.
The situation remains under review as both sides work to clarify the facts and determine responsibility for the tragic events.
