A new law called the Corporate Transparency Act might soon require many businesses in southern Colorado to file a special report. This report is known as the Beneficial Ownership Information report (BOIR). Surprisingly, some business owners in Pueblo's Union Ave area didn't know about this report. If the rule comes into effect, these owners could face daily fines for non-compliance.
The BOIR is designed to help identify who owns a stake in a business. The rule was supposed to start on January 1, 2025, but it's currently being challenged in court. The case is being heard in the Fifth Circuit Appeals Court after it started in Texas. Some business owners think it's wise to prepare the report now, just in case the rule does get approved. The BOIR process is not complicated, and the form can be easily accessed online. It's a good idea for business owners to stay informed about such requirements to avoid any unexpected costs or penalties.
