Comic Star Faces Serious Money Questions After Home Search

Carlos Mencia, known for his jokes on stage, now faces serious questions about how he handled his money. Authorities say over five years, he didn’t report nearly $8. 7 million that he should have. Officials found that about $3. 3 million of this was personal income, while $5. 4 million came from his own business, Nedlos Entertainment, where he serves as the top leader. The case started when officers from the California Franchise Tax Board arrived at his Encino home recently. They secured the property while taking away evidence, which included boxes and sealed bags. After this surprise visit, Mencia was taken into custody and held for the entire three-day holiday weekend. His planned comedy shows had to be canceled, and one venue quickly replaced him on their website.The new Business Tax Fraud Unit, created to tackle tricky financial crimes, is leading the case. The unit says it will chase people who try to avoid paying what they owe, even if someone is famous. Officials believe Mencia received 78 warning notices but still didn’t report all his earnings, causing California to miss out on around $300, 000 in tax money. During the court appearance where Mencia pleaded not guilty to 12 felony charges, the scene was tense. His family, including eight relatives, was there to see him. After the hearing, he was released on a lower bail amount of $50, 000 compared to the initial $250, 000. His lawyer shared that Mencia felt shocked and overwhelmed while in jail, comparing the experience to overkill for the situation.
