Commanders' Big Move: Laremy Tunsil Joins the Team
Washington, DC, USATue Mar 11 2025
The Washington Commanders recently made a bold move to bolster their offensive line. They acquired Laremy Tunsil, a five-time Pro Bowl tackle, from the Houston Texans. This trade involved giving up four draft picks: third- and seventh-rounders in 2025, and second- and fourth-rounders in 2026. The Commanders also gained a fourth-round pick from Houston this spring.
This isn't the first big trade the Commanders have made this offseason. Earlier, they acquired receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. from the San Francisco 49ers for a fifth-round pick. The Commanders were actively looking for a top left tackle. They had their eyes on Ronnie Stanley but he decided to stay with the Baltimore Ravens. Brandon Coleman, a third-round pick from last spring, had been starting at left tackle for Washington, including all three postseason games. With Tunsil on board, Coleman can now shift to right tackle or guard.
Tunsil's addition is a big deal for the Commanders. He's one of the most skilled offensive linemen in the league, having made the Pro Bowl for the past three years. This move will help protect quarterback Jayden Daniels better and improve their run blocking. Tunsil signed a three-year extension worth up to $75 million two years ago. He still has two years left on his contract, with a cap hit of $21. 35 million each season.
This isn't the first time Tunsil has been traded. He was originally drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 2016 and was later traded to the Houston Texans. Tunsil was ranked 10th among offensive tackles in pass block win rate last season, according to TruMedia. This trade highlights the Commanders' commitment to improving their offensive line and protecting their young quarterback.
The Commanders' aggressive offseason moves show their determination to build a strong team. By acquiring Tunsil, they've addressed a key position and set themselves up for a successful season. This trade could be a game-changer for the Commanders, providing them with the offensive line stability they need to compete at a high level.
