Comparing Old Stats and New xG Metrics in K League 2025
A recent research project set out to see how player rankings based on expected‑goals (xG) numbers line up against the usual event‑based stats used in professional football. The investigators wanted to know whether the two approaches could be used interchangeably or if they should sit side by side.
The study pulled match‑event and tracking data from the 2025 K League 1 season. It focused on four performance areas: finishing, shooting, chance creation, and goalkeeping shot‑stopping. Researchers measured agreement between the two ranking systems using Spearman’s rho and Kendall’s tau, and they also calculated average rank differences. The correlations were moderate to strong, ranging from 0.58 to 0.85, with all results statistically significant. Yet many individual players moved a lot: the average absolute rank shift was between three and sixteen spots, and roughly 44 % of outfield players changed position by ten or more places.
