Congo Ebola Outbreak Reaches New Province
A deadly virus is moving fast in Congo. It is called the Bundibugyo virus. Doctors do not have a vaccine or medicine to stop it. This outbreak started in May. So far, more than nine thousand people have gotten sick. Over four thousand five hundred have died. This makes it the worst outbreak ever in Congo. Health teams are working hard but the virus keeps spreading.
The sickness has now reached eight provinces. The newest one is Nord-Ubangi in the north. Two men in their twenties got sick there. One of them died. They live in Wapinda. This area is next to Bas-Uele province where Ebola was found before. Nearby countries feel the effects too. Uganda had cases but says it is free now. Kenya found eight cases. The Central African Republic has no confirmed cases so far.
Leaders are trying to slow the virus. In North Kivu, people cannot enter from Ituri for one week. There are new travel rules too. A motorcycle can carry only two people. A car can hold only four. Big events are stopped. That means sports games, nightclubs, and political rallies. Violence from rebels and people moving around make the virus spread faster. Some people do not trust health workers. Front-line staff also face tough conditions.
One health official named Ngalebato talked about Wamba. At first, people there did not want help. Later, they started listening. They began reporting sick people. He said Ebola needs everyone to work together. Without community help, stopping the virus is very hard. Many cases happen near mines. People move in and out of mining areas all the time. That is why many deaths happen there.
