Congress Plays Political Ping-Pong with Health Care Subsidies

But now, with a Senate vote just around the corner, it looks like nothing will change. This isn't the first time this has happened. Back in 2018, Democrats wanted a bill to protect some immigrants, and Republicans said they would vote on it after the shutdown. But nothing came of it. Sound familiar? The problem is, most Republicans don't want to extend these health care subsidies. And without enough votes in the Senate, it's unlikely any proposal will pass. Even if it makes it to the House, it's a tough sell. But Democrats think this shutdown was different. They believe they forced Republicans to talk about health care costs, and that will pay off in the next elections. Senator Chuck Schumer said they made Republicans lose a lot of ground. But will it really make a difference? Or is this just another round of political ping-pong?
