Rwanda has never faced an outbreak of Marburg virus disease before, and with 18 people currently in treatment, eight fatalities, and over 100 contacts under surveillance, the nation is scrambling to contain this rare and deadly hemorrhagic disease. Unlike Ebola, there is no treatment or vaccine for Marburg, leaving medical professionals with limited options to save patients. The World Health Organization has deployed a team of seven experts to Rwanda, alongside the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to provide guidance and support in testing and contact-tracing efforts.
Rwanda's public health system has been commended for its robust emergency response, with officials confident in their ability to contain the outbreak. However, Marburg virus has taken advantage of the country's strong healthcare infrastructure, infecting many healthcare workers in the process. Despite the challenge, Rwandans are encouraged to continue with their daily activities, as officials believe they have identified hotspots and are taking necessary precautions to prevent further spread.
