Costume Designer Criticises Met Gala Guests
New York City, USAThu May 07 2026
Molly Rogers, a veteran costume artist known for her work on “Sex and the City” and both “The Devil Wears Prada” films, spoke at a Fashionphile event in New York. She expressed disappointment with many celebrities who attended the 2026 Met Gala, a fundraiser backed by Jeff Bezos.
Rogers said she would not have gone herself and that she was let down by those who did. She mentioned that Meryl Streep, a key figure in her film projects, chose not to attend.
Several actors from the movie—Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci—were seen on the red carpet, along with Streep’s daughters Grace Gummer and Louisa Jacobson.
When asked about the “Fashion Is Art” dress code, Rogers praised a protester outside the museum instead. The panel host clarified that she was referring to Chris Smalls, an Amazon union leader who had been arrested during a demonstration.
Rogers also mocked the bride’s custom gown, questioning how it made the designer Schiaparelli look cheap.
Many regular attendees were absent: Zendaya, Bella Hadid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lady Gaga and Emily Ratajkowski. A source told a newspaper that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani would not attend because the event conflicted with his values.
Streep has never been to the Met Gala, though she appeared on a Vogue cover with Anna Wintour before the release of “Devil Wears Prada 2. ”
The event was sponsored by Amazon and Bezos, who reportedly paid at least $10 million. Beyoncé, Venus Williams and Nicole Kidman co‑hosted the evening with Wintour.
