Could Korean Rice Wine Be the Key to Better Digestion?
KoreaTue Sep 02 2025
Constipation is a growing problem for many people around the world. Makgeolli, a traditional Korean rice wine, is packed with good stuff like probiotics and yeasts that might help keep your gut moving. But does it really work? A recent study tried to find out by testing it on rats with induced constipation.
The Experiment
The experiment involved four groups of rats:
- One group was healthy
- Another had constipation
- The other two were treated with either a common laxative or Makgeolli
After two weeks, the rats given Makgeolli showed:
- Better bowel movements
- Less DNA damage in their colons
- Lower gut enzymes, which can be harmful in large amounts
- Less stress and inflammation in their bodies
What Does This Mean?
Makgeolli might not just be a tasty drink; it could also help with digestion and reduce inflammation. But remember, this study was on rats, not humans. More research is needed to see if the same effects happen in people.
