Could Mushrooms Trigger Multiple Sclerosis?
GLOBALWed Jan 15 2025
Having a condition like multiple sclerosis (MS), a long-term disease affecting the brain and spinal cord. Scientists are busy hunting for potential causes, with viruses like Epstein-Barr (EBV) leading the pack. But did you know fungi might also play a role? It’s true! The most significant genetic risk factor, the HLA-DRB1*15 group, is linked to MS and various fungal infections. Plus, certain MS markers in the blood, such as IL-17 and chitotriosidase, hint at a fungal link.
Take dimethyl fumarate (DMF), once a fungicide, now used to lessen MS symptoms. We’re still figuring out how it works in MS. Also, the low MS risk in kids and its link to herpes simplex type 2 might point to genital fungi as a trigger. While EBV and other infections are strong suspects, fungi haven't been heavily studied yet. But many signs point to fungi being a possible culprit.
Here’s the thing: future research should look into the gut microbiome and fungal infections to better understand MS risks. Similarly, testing other fungicides besides DMF could possibly help manage MS symptoms. It’s all about exploring new paths and keeping an open mind, right?
