Council Spot Gets Vacant as Member Moves Away

Chardon, USASat May 16 2026
Chardon’s city council is about to say goodbye to one of its own. Councilman David Lelko announced he’s stepping down after eight and a half years on the job. He’ll officially leave on May 26 when he packs up and moves out of state. His resignation letter still needs to be filed, but the paperwork will land on the clerk’s desk soon. The empty seat won’t be filled right away. According to local rules, the group has to appoint someone temporarily until voters pick a permanent replacement in the next election. That temporary pick has to live in Chardon, just like the person they’re replacing. Right now, the seat is safe until the end of 2029.
Lelko wasn’t just a name on the list—he actually led the finance group and also helped out with water and sewer decisions. People used to complain about bumpy roads and confusing tax notices; he was in the room when those topics were discussed. Now that he’s leaving, the council’s planning style might shift a little. If anyone in town feels like stepping into his shoes, the city wants to hear from them. Applicants have to be official voters and live in Chardon. They need to send a resume and a short note about why they’re interested. The deadline is noon on June 12, giving potential candidates just under four weeks to gather their paperwork.
