Court Delays Trump's Case Against DA Willis
Washington, DC, USATue Nov 19 2024
In a recent move, a Georgia appeals court has paused oral arguments planned for December 5th. This decision affects a case where President-elect Donald Trump and other defendants are trying to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from their criminal election interference case. The court hasn't given a reason for the delay.
Trump and the other defendants are facing state charges in Atlanta, related to their attempts to overturn Trump's 2020 election loss to President Joe Biden. Earlier this year, the judge allowed Willis to stay on the case, even after finding out she had a romantic relationship with a top prosecutor. Trump and his co-defendants appealed this decision, leading to the Court of Appeals halting the case's proceedings in June.
Meanwhile, other cases against Trump are also in limbo. A New York state judge delayed ruling on Trump's hush money case until Tuesday. The Manhattan DA's office requested this delay to assess how Trump's election win impacts the case. The U. S. Department of Justice is expected to drop two other criminal cases against Trump due to his election.
One case, in Washington D. C. , involves Trump's efforts to overturn Biden's 2020 election win. The judge paused proceedings upon request by special counsel Jack Smith. The other case, in Florida, saw Trump charged with retaining classified documents and obstructing recovery efforts. The Florida case was dismissed by a Trump-appointed judge, but Smith is appealing this decision. He also asked the 11th U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals to suspend proceedings, which they granted, citing Trump's election.
