Crete's Wildfire Chaos: Tourists and Locals Flee as Flames Rage
Crete, Ierapetra, GreeceThu Jul 03 2025
On the Greek island of Crete, a wildfire has been causing chaos. Strong winds have made it hard for firefighters to control the blaze. The fire started near Ierapetra on the southern coast. It has forced thousands of people to leave their hotels and homes.
About 5, 000 tourists had to be evacuated. Some homes and businesses were damaged. By the next morning, 230 firefighters and 10 helicopters were working to stop the fire. The winds, blowing at 50 miles per hour, kept making new fires. This made the job of the firefighters very tough.
Two people were taken to safety by boat. More boats were ready if needed. Evacuated tourists were taken to a basketball arena and other hotels. Some people had trouble breathing, but no serious injuries were reported.
The fire sent ash into the sky. Emergency vehicles and water trucks lined the coastal road. Crete is a popular spot for tourists. The risk of wildfires is still high there and in other parts of southern Greece.
Wildfires are common in Greece during the summer. The fire department has already dealt with many fires this year. In 2018, a big fire in Mati killed over 100 people. Some tried to swim away but drowned.
