Cross in Council: A Clash of Beliefs
Ivry-sur-Seine, FranceMon Jun 15 2026
A debate erupted in the town hall of Ivry-sur-Seine when a councilor named Kevin Nader, who belongs to the National Rally party, raised a rule that would ban religious symbols in official meetings. The proposed change threatened to remove signs such as hijabs, which some members wear. When the mayor, Philippe Bouyssou of the Communist Party, refused to put the rule to a vote, Nader reacted by holding up a wooden cross and reciting a prayer.
He declared that the council would now operate under the symbol of the cross, and wished everyone God’s blessings. The mayor immediately condemned the act as a “political crime, ” accusing Nader of disrespecting secular principles and insulting the local Christian community. The incident highlighted a growing tension between religious expression and the principle of secularism in French local government.
