Crossing Tragedy: One Charged, Four Lost
Calais, FranceSat Apr 11 2026
A 27‑year‑old Sudanese man has been formally accused of putting lives at risk after a boat he supposedly steered off the coast of Calais sank, killing four people trying to reach Britain.
The National Crime Agency says the charges come under a fresh immigration law that lets Britain prosecute those who help dangerous sea crossings.
The incident happened at Equihen Beach when four migrants—two men and two women—were swept away by strong currents while attempting to board what locals call a “taxi‑boat. ” These small motorized inflatables are often used by smugglers to ferry people along the French coast.
French police, who usually avoid stopping such boats on the water to keep people safe, had already rescued 38 others from the same waters earlier that day.
After the tragedy, the accused and 73 other migrants boarded a different vessel and made it to England, where authorities detained the man in question.
In recent weeks, attempts to cross the Channel have increased, with multiple rescue operations saving over 100 people and several fatalities reported.
The new law aims to extend criminal jurisdiction beyond borders, allowing Britain to hold accountable those who facilitate these perilous journeys.
