Crypto ETFs: What to Expect in 2025?

NYC, New York, USAWed Jan 15 2025
In 2025, crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) might see new products hitting the market, but don't hold your breath for demand to match the bitcoin ETFs' success from last year. Bitcoin ETFs, which launched a year ago, attracted a whopping $36 billion in their first year. This was a big deal for crypto, helping to double the total market value of cryptocurrencies in 2024. But what about the new crypto ETFs on the horizon? Applications for funds tracking tokens like Solana, XRP, Hedera (HBAR), and Litecoin have already been submitted. Even if these get the green light this year, they might only attract a small fraction of the assets that flowed into bitcoin ETFs, according to JPMorgan. There's also talk of a hybrid bitcoin and ether fund. JPMorgan analyst Kenneth Worthington thinks these new crypto ETFs won't make a huge impact. He points out that bitcoin ETFs make up just 6% of bitcoin's total market cap after one year. For ether ETFs, it's even less, at 3%, after six months. Using these "adoption rates, " JPMorgan estimates that a Solana ETF could pull in between $3 billion and $6 billion, and an XRP ETF between $4 billion and $8 billion. Worthington also notes that the regulatory environment will play a big role in shaping the future of crypto ETFs. With a new administration and a new SEC chairman in 2025, there could be more opportunities for innovation in crypto. Tyron Ross, founder of registered investment advisor 401 Financial, expects demand for bitcoin ETFs this year to be healthy, but not as explosive as in 2024. He believes investor education and growing confidence in crypto are driving factors. However, he thinks adoption could speed up if bitcoin ETFs are added to Wall Street's model portfolios. "Until crypto is in those portfolios, you won't see that next growth spurt, " Ross said. "When that's addressed, you'll start to see that parabolic growth again. " Ross adds that while there's optimism about the regulatory climate, expectations for new crypto ETFs should be kept in check.
