Crypto Fund Grows Even When Markets Shrink

Andreessen Horowitz, known as a16z, is launching another crypto fund. The new pot will be worth two billion dollars and should close by mid‑2026. Earlier, the firm pulled in four and a half billion for its 2022 fund, but this time it will raise faster. This change helps the firm keep up with crypto’s fast shifts. The crypto market is in a slump. Since early October, more than two trillion dollars has vanished from the total value of all coins. Despite this, a16z still sees promise in blockchain technology. Chris Dixon, the head of a16z Crypto, has long promoted a world where internet services run on blockchains. He wrote a book called “Read Write Own. ” Yet some of his past bets, like the platform Farcaster that competed with Twitter, failed. The company returned one‑eighth of its investors’ money after shutting down. Venture capitalists are now looking beyond pure crypto. Many focus on stablecoins, tokenised real‑world assets, and financial tools that fit with traditional banking.
Others are branching into unrelated tech such as artificial intelligence, longevity science, and robotics. Kyle Samani, who co‑founded Multicoin Capital, stepped down to chase new tech areas. Similarly, Paradigm is adding AI and robotics to its portfolio with a fresh fund that aims for one and a half billion dollars. A16z also backs broader sectors that shape the future, like biology, health, defense, and education. They view AI and crypto as key growth areas for the next few years. The firm expects AI to handle cybersecurity tasks and turn models into app stores. They see privacy as the strongest advantage for crypto, while prediction markets should grow smarter and wider. Stablecoins may merge more closely with traditional finance. According to DeFiLlama, startups in the crypto space raised $895 million last month. That’s a drop of nearly forty percent from the previous month and just below the $1 billion raised in February 2025.
