CsCuCl3 Microcrystals in Solar Fuel Production

We all know that lead-based metal halide perovskites are great at converting light into electricity. But they're also toxic, which holds them back from wider use. What if there's a safer alternative? Scientists have been exploring a series of perovskite microcrystals called CsCuClxBr3-x. This time, they focused on CsCuCl3 and found it to be a real star in making hydrogen from both water and ethanol. Its special structure and long-lasting energy make it perfect for the job. Researchers also learned that special chemicals added during the process play a big part in how well the hydrogen is produced. These microcrystals can float between dissolving and forming again in water with certain chemicals, solving a big stability problem seen in other perovskites. They watched how the structure changed during the process using a technique called XRD. It turns out CsCuCl3 is super stable in saturated hydrochloric acid and produced hydrogen at a great rate—103. 98 μmol g-1 after 210 minutes! This study opens up exciting possibilities for using CsCuCl3 in making solar fuels.
