Cubs Bring In Veteran Reliever Pressly from Astros
Mon Jan 27 2025
The Chicago Cubs have struck a deal with the Houston Astros to acquire veteran reliever Ryan Pressly. The Astros will cover a chunk of Pressly's salary, with a prospect headed their way. Young right-hander Juan Bello, just 21, will be traded to Houston. Bello had a solid season last year in the Cubs' minor league system, with a 3. 21 ERA and good strikeout rates. The Astros value his four-pitch arsenal, which fits their pitching philosophy.
Pressly has been a reliable reliever for the Astros, but his high salary made him a trade candidate. The Astros have been facing budget constraints and needed to free up some payroll space. They've already made moves to reduce costs, including trading Kyle Tucker to the Cubs. Pressly's successful run in Houston includes a great record in both regular season and postseason games.
For the Cubs, Pressly brings experience and reliability to their bullpen. Rookie Porter Hodge did well as closer last season, but Pressly's track record could make him the top saves candidate. The Cubs are looking to strengthen their relief corps after injuries affected their performance last year. They've also added Eli Morgan and Caleb Thielbar to the mix.
Pressly's statistics last season showed some signs of aging, with slightly above-average strikeout and walk rates. However, he continues to excel in generating grounders and has elite spin rates on his curveball and fastball. The Astros will now look to fill the gap left by Pressly's departure, possibly exploring lower-cost options or making a bigger strike if they don't add another major salary.
