Cuomo's Big Return: Will New Yorkers Give Him Another Chance?
New York City, USAMon Mar 03 2025
Andrew Cuomo's political comeback has begun. He announced his run for New York City mayor. This has sparked a lot of questions. Is he a good choice for the city? The answer is not clear.
Cuomo's political journey has been full of ups and downs. He was once a powerful governor. He resigned in 2021. Why? There were serious allegations against him. A report by the state attorney general accused him of sexually harassing at least 11 women. Some women said he touched them inappropriately, made unwanted advances, and commented on their appearance. One aide even filed a criminal complaint. Cuomo denied the most serious allegations but apologized for making people uncomfortable.
Many top Democrats, including then-President Joe Biden and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, pushed for his resignation. Cuomo blamed "cancel culture" for his downfall. This is a term used when people are ostracized for their beliefs or actions.
Cuomo's time as governor had its highlights. He legalized same-sex marriage in New York. He oversaw major infrastructure projects, like renovating LaGuardia Airport and building a new train hall at Pennsylvania Station. He also raised the minimum wage and created programs for family leave and economic revitalization. However, his administration faced a corruption scandal involving a $1 billion economic revitalization program in Buffalo.
Cuomo's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic was a mixed bag. He gained national attention for his strict social-distancing rules and vaccination efforts. But his administration was criticized for understating deaths in nursing homes. This was part of an effort to deflect criticism of a policy that barred nursing homes from refusing COVID-19 patients discharged from hospitals.
Now, Cuomo is betting on a comeback. He sees an opportunity in the current political climate. The incumbent mayor, Eric Adams, faces federal corruption charges. Adams' political troubles have led to speculation that he is too close to former President Donald Trump, who is unpopular in the city. Most other candidates in the primary are far to the left of both Adams and Cuomo. This could leave voters with a tough choice between liberals whose views they might not share and two scandal-scarred Democratic heavyweights.
Cuomo's accusers, however, are not happy about his comeback. Lindsey Boylan, the first woman to publicly accuse Cuomo of harassment, wrote that letting him return to public office would be a mistake. She believes he hasn't changed and that powerful people are still afraid of him. Cuomo, on the other hand, has said he has learned from his mistakes and is a better person for it.
Cuomo's entry into the mayoral race has sparked immediate criticism from some who believe he doesn't deserve a second chance. He portrayed New York as a city in crisis. He cast himself as a tough manager who can tackle problems like homelessness and high housing costs. But will voters buy it? Only time will tell.
New York City's mayoral race is heating up. Cuomo's return adds a new layer of complexity. Voters will have to decide if they want to give him another chance. The stakes are high, and the outcome is uncertain.
