Curcumin Nanocarrier Boosts Brain Recovery After Brain Bleed
Scientists tested a new way to deliver curcumin after brain bleeding in rats. Curcumin comes from turmeric and fights inflammation. But it doesn't work well in the body because it breaks down too fast.
They made a special carrier called a liposomal nanocarrier. This helps curcumin stay active longer. The particles were about 103 nanometers wide. They packed in 74% of the curcumin.
Rats had brain bleeding caused by collagenase. Some got empty liposomes. Others got the curcumin-loaded ones. They gave doses at 2, 24, and 48 hours after surgery. Each dose was 30 mg per kg of body weight.
After seven days, they checked brain tissue. The curcumin group showed less inflammation. Levels of NLRP3 and caspase-1 dropped. These proteins cause swelling in the brain.
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels went up. So did signals from TrkB and CREB. These help brain cells grow and survive. Erk activity also returned to normal.
Synapses looked healthier. PSD-95 levels increased. This protein keeps connections between neurons strong. Fewer brain cells died in treated rats.
Memory tests showed improvement. Rats ran through a Y-shaped maze. Those on curcumin did better. They remembered paths faster. Movement stayed normal.
The study suggests this delivery method may help after stroke. It targets the prefrontal cortex. That area handles thinking and memory. More research is needed before human trials.
