D. C. Police Shake Up Immigration Policies
In a significant policy shift, the Metropolitan Police Department in D.C. is now allowing officers to inform Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) about undocumented immigrants they meet during routine traffic stops. This change means that even immigrants who haven't committed any crimes could be reported to ICE for potential arrest and deportation.
D.C. Mayor's Stance
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has always stated that D.C. isn't a sanctuary city, pointing out that the city has worked with ICE in the past. However, D.C. does have some policies that support immigrants, like letting noncitizens vote in local elections and limiting cooperation with federal immigration agencies.
President Trump's Response
President Donald Trump praised this new policy, calling it a "great step" and suggesting that other cities should follow suit. He believes it will help reduce crime, even though crime rates in D.C. are already at historic lows.
Recent Actions by the Trump Administration
Recently, Trump took control of D.C.'s police department and sent in 800 National Guard troops to help with crime prevention. He also deployed federal law enforcement officers, including ICE agents, to patrol the streets alongside local police. While some of these officers have been doing regular police work, others have been conducting targeted operations to arrest immigrants.
Since Trump started his second term, his administration has been focusing on deporting more undocumented immigrants, fulfilling a major campaign promise. ICE has been carrying out raids in major cities across the U.S., some of which have led to large protests.
