Bovine mastitis, a common health issue for dairy cows, and milk quality have been hot topics for researchers and farmers worldwide for years. But you know what hasn't been talked about much? The role of employee management in keeping cows healthy and milk high-quality. Most people have been focused on other stuff, like the National Mastitis Council's 10-point plan. So, a study was done on 88 Danish dairy farms with hired help to see how employee management affects cow health. A bunch of questions were asked to farmers about how they manage their workers. The results showed that farms with generic standard operating procedures (SOPs) had milk with more somatic cells, which isn't great. But when employees were trained with custom SOPs for their herd, there was a slight drop in new mastitis infections. And get this, just having SOPs around but not using them actually increased the risk of new infections. So, training with herd-specific SOPs is key to keeping cows healthy, but it doesn't affect milk quality as much.
