San Francisco's soon-to-be mayor, Daniel Lurie, has started seeking help from tech giants and business leaders to give his city a much-needed facelift. Among his advisors are OpenAI's Sam Altman and former Twitter CFO Ned Segal. The tech heir, who also founded Tipping Point, aims to make San Francisco the top business spot in the country again. He hopes to achieve this by diversifying the city's sectors, which currently rely heavily on tech. Lurie envisions welcoming companies from various fields, like healthcare and arts, to set up shop in San Francisco.
In his first six months in office, Lurie plans to tackle the city's fentanyl crisis and homelessness. He aims to declare a state of emergency over the fentanyl issue on his first day and to build 1, 500 shelter beds within his first half year. To bring businesses back, Lurie believes a fully-staffed police department and 911 dispatch office are essential. He also wants to address the city's behavioral health crisis by expanding mental health and drug treatment options.
"San Francisco won't change overnight, " Lurie said. "We need to show the world that our city is no longer a place for dealing or doing drugs, or for sleeping on the streets. "
