A recent outbreak of listeria, a serious foodborne illness, has led to the death of a California infant and sickened ten other people. The source of the outbreak has been traced back to ready-to-eat meat and poultry products from Yu Shang Food, Inc. , based in South Carolina. These products, including chicken feet, duck neck, beef shank, and pork hock, were shipped to stores nationwide and sold online.
The outbreak was first detected in October when routine tests found listeria in both the products and the production environment. Since then, more than 72, 000 pounds of these products have been recalled. Illnesses have been reported in four different states, with nine of the eleven affected individuals requiring hospitalization.
One of the most tragic cases involved a pregnant California woman whose twins were exposed to the bacteria. Sadly, both infants died, but only one tested positive for listeria. This highlights the importance of understanding that listeria can be deadly, especially for vulnerable groups like infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
Listeria poisoning can manifest in various ways, from mild symptoms like fever and muscle aches to more severe issues such as headaches, stiff necks, and even convulsions. What makes listeria particularly troublesome is that symptoms can appear quickly, within hours or days, or take up to three months to show up.
To keep yourself safe, it's crucial to check your refrigerator and freezer for any recalled products and discard them immediately. Clean and sanitize any surfaces that may have come into contact with the contaminated food.
In other news, a separate listeria outbreak linked to recalled Boar’s Head deli meats has been declared over by the CDC. This outbreak resulted in ten fatalities and sickened many others over the summer.
