Deadly Quake Strikes Myanmar
MyanmarSat Mar 29 2025
In Myanmar, the death toll from a recent earthquake has risen to over 1, 000 people. The quake, measuring 7. 7 on the Richter scale, hit near the country's second-largest city. The military-led government reported that 1, 002 people have died, with 2, 376 injured and 30 missing. The numbers could still increase as more details come in.
This disaster strikes a country already facing a severe humanitarian crisis due to a long-running civil war. The conflict makes it tough to move around and deliver aid, raising concerns that the death toll could climb even higher.
The earthquake hit on Friday, with its epicenter close to Mandalay. Several strong aftershocks followed, including one measuring 6. 4. The quake caused widespread destruction, toppling buildings, damaging roads, and even bursting a dam.
In Thailand, the quake was felt strongly in Bangkok, a city of about 17 million people. Six people died, 26 were injured, and 47 are still missing, mostly from a construction site near a popular market. A 33-story building under construction collapsed, leaving families and friends desperate for news about their loved ones.
Myanmar is no stranger to earthquakes, sitting on a major fault line. The country experiences frequent tremors due to its location on the Sagaing Fault, which separates the India plate and the Sunda plate. This fault line runs through a heavily populated area, where many buildings are made of timber and brick, making them vulnerable to collapse during a quake.
The earthquake has exacerbated an already dire situation in Myanmar. The country is in the midst of a bloody civil war, with government forces battling various militias. This conflict has displaced over 3 million people and left nearly 20 million in need of aid. The humanitarian needs are significant, and the situation is likely to worsen as the full extent of the damage becomes clear.
Countries around the world have stepped in to offer aid. China and Russia, both major suppliers of weapons to Myanmar's military, were among the first to provide humanitarian assistance. Teams from China, Russia, India, Malaysia, and South Korea have arrived or are on their way to help with rescue and relief efforts. The United Nations has also allocated funds to support recovery efforts.
