Deebo Samuel's Calf Strain: A Major Blow for the 49ers
Tue Sep 17 2024
Deebo Samuel, one of the 49ers' most promising receivers, is sidelined with a calf strain he suffered during Sunday's loss to the Vikings. Coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Samuel will miss "a couple of weeks," dashing the hopes of 49ers fans who had been counting on him to lead the team's offense.
But what exactly happened to Samuel's calf? According to Shanahan, it seems that Samuel thinks he may have strained it while catching a 2-yard pass on the third-to-last play of offense. Shanahan himself believes that there were only two or three plays left after that, which raises some questions about the timing of the injury.
This is, unfortunately, just the latest in a series of setbacks for the 49ers. Just last week, they placed running back Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve with a calf strain and Achilles tendinitis, and he won't return until at least October 10. Meanwhile, rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall, the team's first-round pick, is still recovering from a gunshot wound he suffered during an attempted robbery last month and will miss at least two more games.
Shanahan, however, remained optimistic, saying, "When you lose real good players, it's always tough, but it happens all over the league, and it's a huge part of this league, and a huge part of this game. You've just got to deal with it. "
But can the 49ers really "deal with it"? Samuel was having a great start to the season, making eight catches for 110 yards against the Vikings and five for 54 yards in the season opener against the Jets. His absence will undoubtedly weaken the team's receiving corps, making it harder for them to compete against top-tier opponents.
