DeepMind Workers Vote to Unionize Over Military AI Use

London, United KingdomSat May 09 2026
Hundreds of engineers at Google DeepMind’s London office decided to form a union after worries that their AI tools are being used by U. S. and Israeli armed forces. The vote, held on May 5, showed 98 % support for recognizing the Communication Workers Union and Unite as their representatives. This could be the first union push at a major frontier‑AI lab worldwide. The staff, numbering around 1 000 in London, demanded that DeepMind stop supplying AI to military projects. They also want the company to reinstate its 2018 promise not to develop weapons or surveillance systems, create an independent ethics committee, and let employees refuse projects on moral grounds. In February 2025, Google dropped its earlier pledge to avoid AI for weapons or spying, sparking anger from workers and human‑rights groups. An anonymous employee told reporters that their models are already aiding the Israeli military’s actions against Palestinians. “Even if it is only for admin tasks, it still helps make genocide cheaper and faster, ” the worker said. The letter to management gives them 10 working days to recognize the unions or face a legal challenge.
Union leaders see this as a chance for tech workers to stand with oppressed communities. “It shows solidarity and trade unionism, ” said a CWU officer. The move reflects growing discomfort among tech staff about the ethical implications of their work for defense contracts. Google has a history of employee protests over military ties. Earlier this year, more than 600 staff signed an open letter against Pentagon use of its tech. In 2024, Google dismissed dozens over a cloud‑AI deal with Israel called Project Nimbus. The company also bought Wiz, an Israeli security firm linked to a top army cyber unit. If DeepMind does not acknowledge the unions, staff may launch formal legal action or “research strikes” where they stop working. The outcome could set a precedent for labor organization in AI labs, especially as the U. K. government pushes to attract tech investment.
