Defense Leader Hegseth Takes a Political Stand
Kentucky, USATue May 19 2026
A U. S. military chief has stepped into the political arena, supporting a Republican challenger in Kentucky and critiquing an incumbent who opposes former President Trump. Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of Defense, spoke at a campaign rally for Ed Gallrein, calling out Representative Thomas Massie for his clashes with Trump over key bills and his push to disclose records on Jeffrey Epstein. The upcoming primary will be the costliest in House history.
It is rare for a defense secretary to attend a campaign event, especially during wartime when the armed forces are expected to remain neutral. Hegseth has already pushed boundaries by leading religious services at the Pentagon, labeling journalists as adversaries of Jesus, and targeting a Democratic senator who urged troops to defy unlawful orders. At the rally, he stressed that his presence was personal and not an official act, a claim supported by Pentagon lawyers to comply with the Hatch Act.
During his remarks, Hegseth praised Gallrein as a supporter of Trump’s agenda and labeled Massie an obstructionist who often sides with Democrats when unity is needed. He warned that the movement must stay cohesive during critical moments.
Massie has responded by noting that every time Trump mentions him on social media, his campaign receives a boost. He hinted that the president is eager to remove him from office. Trump has been actively targeting Republicans who have opposed him, such as Senator Bill Cassidy, whose re-election bid failed after the former president backed a rival candidate.
The event underscores the growing tension between Trump’s loyalists and those who have challenged his authority, with Hegseth’s involvement highlighting a blurring line between military duty and political engagement.
