The upcoming State of the Union will see a wave of Democratic lawmakers choosing silence or alternative events over direct protest. After last year’s heated scenes in the House chamber, many are opting for a more subdued stance.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries outlined two paths at a recent briefing: either attend the address quietly or skip it entirely and send a message through absence. He highlighted the possibility of joining other gatherings around Capitol Hill.
A group of senators and representatives is gathering on the National Mall for a “People’s State of the Union. ” Participants include Ed Markey, Jeff Merkley, Chris Murphy, Tina Smith and Chris Van Hollen, along with Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Becca Balint and Greg Casar. Markey urged listeners to focus on community power instead of the president’s words.
Earlier that evening, a separate assembly titled “State of the Swamp” will convene at the National Press Club. Senators Ron Wyden and others, plus Reps. Seth Moulton, Dan Goldman and Eugene Vindman, plan to attend.
Some lawmakers are simply staying away. Representative Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez will not be present, while Senator Ruben Gallego announced he would spend the time working for Arizona and family rather than watching the speech.
A few are making symbolic statements. Rep. Robert Garcia will attend counter‑programming with Annie Farmer, a survivor of Epstein abuse, while Farmer will be present at the president’s address. This move underscores an attempt to balance protest with engagement.
Yet a handful still intend to sit in the chamber. Senator Richard Blumenthal said he will confront Trump face‑to‑face, choosing silence as his form of defiance. He believes that others will express dissent in different ways.
Overall, the Democrats’ approach this year leans toward thoughtful presence or respectful absence rather than overt confrontation.
