Democrats Skip Midterms, Pick 2028 Convention Cities
USATue Mar 03 2026
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has decided not to stage a midterm convention this fall, instead focusing all its energy on the 2028 presidential nomination event. The party will announce that the next convention will run from August 7 to 10, 2028, and it has narrowed its search to five potential host cities: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, and Philadelphia.
This move comes after Republicans announced plans for a midterm convention in 2026—a departure from their usual strategy. The DNC’s choice to forego a similar gathering is seen as a way to conserve resources and avoid tying midterm candidates too closely to President Trump’s controversial policies. DNC executive director Roger Lau said the party is putting its money where it matters most, concentrating on flipping seats in 2025 instead of spreading efforts thin.
Trump has been vocal about hosting a midterm event to showcase his administration’s achievements. He even posted on social media that the GOP would hold a “great” convention to highlight successes since 2024. However, Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kiersten Pels countered that the DNC cannot afford a midterm convention, financially or politically.
Conventions in presidential years are key moments for parties to rally supporters and spotlight candidates. A midterm convention’s impact is uncertain, especially in an era of rapid media cycles and shifting voter priorities. The stakes are high: if Democrats gain control of the House, they could block much of Trump’s agenda for the remaining two years of his term.
The 2028 host city list reflects strategic messaging. Chicago, the site of last year’s DNC, and other cities like Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia have historically been chosen for their political weight. Atlanta offers a different signal, given Georgia’s status as a swing state and recent election‑related controversies that have kept the state in national headlines.
The DNC’s financial situation contrasts sharply with the Republican National Committee’s, which holds nearly $102 million in cash compared to the DNC’s roughly $15 million on hand and over $17 million in debt. Yet the Democrats’ recent electoral successes—winning governorships in New Jersey and Virginia—have boosted morale and suggested momentum heading into the 2028 cycle.
The party’s decision to skip a midterm convention is part of a broader strategy to address challenges faced during the Biden administration and recover from 2024 losses. By concentrating on a 2028 convention, Democrats aim to solidify their base and present a united front as they seek to regain the White House.
