Dengue Alert: 16 Countries Warned
WorldwideWed Mar 25 2026
The U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has lifted a new travel warning on March 23 that highlights dengue fever risks in 16 nations. This Level 1 notice is the lowest tier of CDC alerts, meaning travelers are advised to keep usual precautions but no need to cancel trips.
Dengue is a mosquito‑borne virus that can turn severe, causing internal bleeding and organ failure. The warning comes after more U. S. travelers have returned home with the illness, showing a global rise in dengue activity.
The countries named are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Colombia, Cook Islands, Cuba, Guyana, Maldives, Mali, Mauritania, New Caledonia, Pakistan, Samoa, Sudan, Timor‑Leste and Vietnam. Each has seen either high local cases or an uptick in U. S. infections, prompting the advisory.
Key prevention tips include using EPA‑registered insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, staying in air‑conditioned or screened rooms, and avoiding outdoor activity during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Even after travel, people should protect themselves from bites for several weeks to stop local spread.
While there is no specific cure, treatment focuses on rest, acetaminophen for fever and pain, and plenty of fluids. A vaccine exists but is not widely available for short‑term travelers. Most dengue cases are mild, yet severe forms can be life‑threatening, so vigilance is essential.
