Denver's transportation progress is at a standstill. The city's leaders are not prioritizing safety. This is clear from recent decisions. For example, a planned safety project in West Wash Park was canceled. Wealthy residents complained. The city spent $100, 000 to change the design. This happened while safety projects went unfunded.
Downtown Denver saw safety posts removed from bike lanes. The city spent $200, 000 to do this. The posts were only three feet tall and a few inches wide. Businesses said they blocked views. But safety should come first.
The city has a special fund for mobility improvements. It was created to improve street safety. Now, it's used for general expenses. The Safe Routes to Schools program was also affected. The mayor tried to cut its funding by 80%. All full-time staff were laid off. Children are still getting injured while walking or biking to school.
Bridge infrastructure is also suffering. Some bridges are in such poor condition that fire trucks can't use them. The city's transportation policy is not just about moving vehicles. It's about connecting people. It's about safety, affordability, and reliability.
Denver needs a mayor who understands this. The previous administration made great progress. But now, that progress is stalled. Other cities are moving forward. Paris and Seattle are examples. They are investing in transportation. Denver needs to do the same.
The mayor has a vision for Denver. He talks about climate leadership and equity. But his actions don't match his words. Denver needs a mayor who will defend and strengthen transportation progress. Not dismantle it.
