The universe is full of planets. Many of us are drawn to the sand and dust of desert worlds. "Star Wars" and the "Dune" series are famous for their desert planets. Tatooine and Arrakis are memorable. Is it possible to have dry and dusty planets with life such as creatures like womp rats, sandworms or sarlaccs?
"Star Wars" fans know about Tatooine's desert. It's far from an Earth-like haven. But is it realistic?
The thought-provoking, cold hard fact is this. The outer rim world of Tatooine and the "Dune" universe's Arrakis might not be habitable. At least not without a lot of special tech. The desert planets are just sand and dust. NASA says so.
Many sci-fis show water-filled worlds that may be harder to swallow.
Desert planets are a bit easier to imagine. They have no need for seafaring. But they still may not be real. NASA scientists say the harsh conditions on Arrakis, Tatooine or the like are merely fiction.
Water and life are like best friends. Where there's water, there's life. So how much water would exist on planets like Arrakis and Tatooine?
No water or snow means no life as we understand it. Water cycles through the land, sea, and air. A planet like Arrakis would have almost none of that.
There is also the matter of how much light reaches these distant desert worlds. Life needs light. Plants and creatures on Earth need light for food. If the universe's desert worlds were too far from their suns, they would be cold and dark. There would be no life on them. From that standpoint, desert planets are less believable. The concept of a hard outer rim world like Tatooine or a planet like Arrakis might not be possible in the real universe. They may not be very different than if it was just an aquatic planet. But deserts are pretty and cool.
NASA scientists bring in a good point. The sand worms in "Dune" and the creatures in "Star Wars" are a fun but not very scientifically believable. They are quite unlikely to appear on desert worlds.
If you want to dream big, create games with planets covered in water and plants. The ecosystem might be complex and full of life. The locales of Tatooine and Arrakis are far less exciting.
