Detroit High School Sports Night: Stars, Wins and Stories

The MotorCity Casino Hotel hosted a glittering ceremony on June 24, celebrating more than 300 Detroit-area athletes. The event highlighted the top performers across every sport, from football and basketball to cross‑country and gymnastics. Key awards included the overall boys and girls athlete of the year, best coaches, team champions, and a Courage Award for perseverance. Samson Gash of Novi Detroit Catholic Central earned boys athlete of the year after leading his football team to an undefeated season and a state title, while also posting impressive track times. Elizabeth Eichbrecht of West Bloomfield High School captured girls athlete of the year by winning two freestyle events for a fourth straight time, setting state records. The Shamrocks of Novi Detroit Catholic Central were named boys team of the year for their dominant 14‑0 run and balanced play on both offense and defense.
Birmingham Detroit Country Day’s volleyball squad claimed girls team of the year, repeating as state champions with a strong playoff run. The Courage Award went to Chris Kendrick of Detroit Denby High School, who overcame personal tragedy to become the school’s all‑time passing leader. Coach honors went to Chris Laney of Dearborn Divine Child for a Division 4 title and Stephen Manuel of Romeo for a first girls state championship. Lifetime Achievement was awarded to Loretta Vogel, whose four‑decade coaching career includes two state titles and national recognition. Special recognitions highlighted standout performances in football, flag‑football, soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, bowling, gymnastics, hockey, skiing, swimming, wrestling, golf, lacrosse, tennis, track and field, cross‑country, and volleyball. Many recipients are set to continue their athletic journeys at universities across the country, carrying forward the spirit of competition and community.
