Detroit has seen a big drop in crime. It's the lowest it's been in a long time. In 2025, the city had fewer murders than any year since 1965. This is not just a one-year thing. Crime has been going down for three years in a row.
The police chief, Todd Bettison, talked about this at a press event. He said the city will keep doing what works. The mayor, Mary Sheffield, was there too. She announced a new plan. It's called the Office of Neighborhood and Community Safety. This office will focus on helping people. It will offer things like job training and mental health support.
All types of crime went down. Homicides dropped a lot. There were 165 murders in 2025. That's way fewer than in past years. Shootings that didn't kill anyone also went down. There were 447 in 2025. That's less than half of what it was in 2020.
Carjackings and car thefts went down too. There were 77 carjackings in 2025. That's about half of what it was the year before. Car thefts also dropped by 23. 3%.
Other crimes went down as well. Sexual assaults, aggravated assaults, robberies, and burglaries all decreased. The city says this is because of teamwork. They worked with the county sheriff, state police, federal agencies, and community groups.
The new office will try to stop crime before it happens. It will focus on helping people in the community. This includes things like helping young people, giving job training, and providing mental health support. It will also make sure people have access to places to have fun.
