Detroit is bracing for a winter weather whirlwind. The city is set to experience a double dose of chilly conditions. First, a light snowfall is expected to kick off the day. It might even bring some freezing drizzle. This initial round of snow is expected to wrap up by noon. However, a bit of ice might still accumulate in the early afternoon. Temperatures will hover just above freezing, with winds gusting up to 25 mph.
Later, the weather takes a turn for the messier. Snow is expected to return in the evening, around 8 PM. It will then transition to a mix of rain and snow overnight. This mix will continue into Wednesday morning. The Thumb region is expected to see mainly snow. A winter weather advisory has been issued there from 10 PM tonight until 4 AM Wednesday. Snow totals in the Thumb region could reach between 3 to 5 inches.
Meanwhile, the rain-snow line in the metro area is tricky to predict. This makes forecasting snow totals a challenge. Winds will be blustery, with gusts up to 30 mph. Temperatures will drop overnight, leading to concerns about a re-freeze on Wednesday morning.
Looking ahead, the rest of the week doesn't promise much warmth. Lake effect flurries are expected each day from Thursday through the weekend. An arctic blast is also on the horizon. This will bring single-digit lows and potential sub-zero wind chills in the mornings.
So, Detroiters, bundle up and stay alert. Winter is here, and it's bringing its A-game.
