Devastation in Omdurman: Market Attack

Sun Feb 02 2025
In the midst of a brutal civil war in Sudan, the city of Omdurman became the target of yet another paramount tragedy. Paramilitary forces, known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), launched a brutal attack on the Sabrein Market this past weekend. The aftermath was grim: 54 people lost their lives and at least 158 were injured. This was not a one-off incident. Instead, it's part of a disturbing cycle of violence that has plagued the country. The RSF have been at odds with the Sudanese military since April 2023, and the conflict shows no signs of slowing down. The attack on the Sabrein Market is far from the only recent tragedy. A week prior, 70 people were killed when another RSF attack targeted El Fasher's lone functioning hospital. The conflict has caused millions to flee their homes, facing starvation as famine spreads across the country. The international community has taken notice of the escalating tensions and the mounting death tolls. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has launched investigations into war crimes and crimes against humanity. The United States has even accused the RSF of committing genocide. In recent months, the RSF has faced significant setbacks on the battlefield, losing control over many areas in Khartoum, Omdurman, and the eastern and central provinces. The Sudanese military has since regained control of Wad Medani, the capital of Gezira province, and the country's largest oil refinery. The crisis in Sudan is far from over. Meanwhile the Sudanese Doctors Syndicate has reported critical shortages of medical personnel and a dire need for additional medical support at Al-Naw hospital, where the injured were treated. A video posted on social media revealed the grim aftermath of the attack, with rows of body bags and wounded individuals, including some being treated on the hospital floor. "This tragic event adds to the bloody record of this militia, " said Khalid al-Aleisir, minister of culture and government spokesperson. "It's a clear violation of international humanitarian law. " This is not just about numbers and statistics. Behind every casualty figure, there are families torn apart, communities shattered, and a nation grappling with unimaginable pain. It's a stark reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where civilians bear the brunt of the conflict and desperately need global support and intervention for survival. How will the international community respond to the ongoing chaos in Sudan? The world is watching, but for now, the people of Omdurman and other cities in Sudan need urgent help.
