Device‑Free Tracking Using Smart WiFi Signals

Fri May 22 2026
This study looks at how to find people in a room without putting any sensors on them, by using the tiny changes that WiFi signals make when someone moves. Researchers noticed that detailed data from these signals, called channel state information or CSI, can be used to spot more than one person at once. To do this, they turned the problem into a math puzzle: find a few “active” spots in several data sets that all share the same pattern.
The trick is to let the computer know a bit about where people might be, even if that guess isn’t perfect. They built a layered statistical model that lets the computer use this rough idea and still figure out exactly where each person is. The method relies on a Bayesian approach that updates guesses as it processes the data. Tests show this new technique outperforms older methods that also try to find multiple people from WiFi data.
