Digital School Alert: Utah Students and Parents on Guard After Canvas Hack

Utah, USASat May 09 2026
Utah’s schools, from elementary to university, are on high alert after a nationwide attack on the Canvas learning platform. The breach, carried out by a group called ShinyHunters, hit nearly 9, 000 schools worldwide and exposed billions of private messages. The hackers threatened to leak the data but were stopped before a dark‑web site went live with the stolen information. Canvas, which students use to see grades and assignments, was down on Thursday. Many were left unable to study for finals. By Friday morning the system was back online, and Instructure’s forensic team said the attackers no longer had access. The university that uses Canvas confirmed its own data was safe, but it warned that personal details like names and email addresses could have been accessed.
Utah Valley University, the state’s largest campus, announced that its Canvas system was functioning again and urged staff and students to watch their accounts for odd activity. The Utah State Board of Education said no action was needed right now but asked families to be wary of suspicious emails that might pretend to come from Canvas. The Canyons School District sent out a cautionary note, telling parents not to click on unknown links and to report any strange messages. Ogden School District, while unsure if its data was affected, decided to take Canvas offline for the weekend to protect student information. This isn’t Utah’s first cyber scare. Earlier this year PowerSchool, another education platform used by many local schools, was hacked and personal data—including some Social Security numbers—was stolen. The new Canvas attack shows how vulnerable school tech can be, and why vigilance matters.
