Director Defends New Martha Stewart Doc Against Her Critiques
New York, USASat Nov 16 2024
When the Netflix documentary "Martha" premiered, Martha Stewart wasn't thrilled. She criticized the director, R. J. Cutler, for using less-than-flattering camera angles and leaving out big chunks of her life. Cutler, however, wasn't too bothered by her feedback. He understood that Stewart might want a different film, but he stood by his vision.
Cutler explained that making a documentary like this involves a lot of trust. He respected Stewart for putting her faith in him. They had discussions about the film, and if he thought her ideas could improve it, he'd consider them. But ultimately, he's the one making the film.
Stewart was particularly unhappy about how the film changed over time. She wanted different music and wasn't a fan of some of the scenes. Cutler acknowledged that being the subject of such a film can be tough and requires empathy. But that doesn't mean he'd change the film just because she wanted him to.
Despite her criticisms, Stewart expressed interest in making a second film. She felt the first one left out a lot of her life. When asked if she enjoyed the filming process, she said no. She didn't like sharing her feelings and thought the director was too intense.
Cutler didn't comment on Stewart's desire for a second film. He's focused on the documentary he made and stands by his creative choices.
