Tue Aug 27 2024
Get ready to be amazed by the newest addition to the Canadian Coast Guard family, the CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk! This colossal, crimson vessel is not just a pretty face; it's a state-of-the-art floating laboratory that will revolutionize marine research in Canada.
Launched at Seaspan's North Vancouver Shipyards, this Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel (OOSV) is packed with features that make it a game-changer in understanding our oceans. The CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk boasts an on-board computer, marine mammal observation station, ocean sampling room, oceanographic winch, and both permanent and portable labs. These features enable researchers to delve deep into the ocean's depths, collecting samples and analyzing them right on the ship's deck. This vessel is designed to help track ocean conditions as they change due to climate change and understand how these shifts may impact fish populations, habitats, and deep-sea food webs.
Named after a revered Nunavik Elder known for his dedication to Inuit language and culture, the Naalak Nappaaluk is not only a scientific powerhouse but also capable of conducting search and rescue operations and environmental response when needed. At 88 meters long and 17. 6 meters wide, this vessel matches the size of its predecessor, the CCGS Hudson, but surpasses it in capabilities.
Over the coming months, the vessel will remain in local waters as its crew and scientists familiarize themselves with the new space. Full-scale research projects are set to commence in 2023 and 2024, with the 60-strong contingent ready to explore oceans from the Northern to the Southern Atlantic.
Seaspan Shipyards CEO John McCarthy hailed the launch as a 'historic day' for Canada and its ocean research efforts. With its cutting-edge technology and unparalleled research capabilities, the CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk is poised to deepen our understanding of the oceans that Canadians rely on for food, livelihoods, and the health of the nation. health of the nation.
