Discovering Health Benefits in an Unlikely Vegetable

Vietnam, Northwest,Mon Jan 06 2025
Have you ever thought that common vegetables could hold hidden health secrets? Scientists have found something amazing in a popular edible plant from Vietnam called Elatostema tenuicaudatum. This plant, which is often eaten in the northwest region of the country, has been studied for its potential benefits. Researchers used a technique called molecular networking-guided isolation to find 15 new types of hydrogenated phenanthrene glycosides in the plant. These are special compounds that haven't been described before. Among them, eight were hexahydro-phenanthrenone glycosides, four were tetrahydro-phenanthrenone glycosides, one was a dihydro-phenanthrenol glycoside, two were dimers, and two were known dihydrophenanthrene glycosides. To understand these compounds better, scientists used spectroscopic data like NMR and ECD calculations. Their findings were impressive. The crude extract from the plant, along with compounds 5, 6, 8, and 14, showed a special ability to inhibit dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV). This means they could potentially help manage certain health conditions. The IC50 values were 220. 5 ± 39. 6 μg/mL, 141. 7 ± 15. 6, 151. 2 ± 11. 8, 107. 9 ± 19. 6, and 71. 9 ± 8. 9 μM, respectively. Molecular docking studies revealed that compound 14 had the highest binding affinity with DPP-IV. But that's not all! Compounds 1, 9, 11, and 14 also showed significant hepatoprotective effects. This means they could help protect the liver from damage caused by acetaminophen in HepG2 cells. These discoveries suggest that Elatostema tenuicaudatum could be a great addition to the diets of people at risk of diabetes and chronic liver disease. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best solutions can be found in the simplest places.
