Cow milk has long ruled the dairy scene, but newer alternatives are rising. Why? Because they might offer better health benefits. These benefits come from special proteins in milk that boost the immune system and have extra powers to do good things in the body, called bioactive peptides.
Researchers found that the creamy part of milk has the highest amount of these proteins. They looked at both cow and Arabian camel milk. In this creamy part, they discovered more immune system-related proteins. To separate these proteins, they used simple methods like filtration and a process called precipitation. These methods found an average of 170 and 177 bioactive peptides in camel and cow milk, respectively. A more complex method only found 31.
Now, some proteins can cause allergies. In both milks, there were 53 (camel) and 52 (cow) of these potentially allergenic proteins. Surprisingly, more than half of the cow milk allergens have similar counterparts in camel milk. Yet, the major milk allergen, called β-lactoglobulin, was not found in camel milk.
This study gives us a big list of all the proteins and potential allergens in camel and cow milk. It also tells us about the good guys—the bioactive peptides that could be great for health.
But here’s a thing to ponder: If you’re considering switching from cow to camel milk for health reasons, remember that the benefits might be different for each person. Plus, we’re still learning about all the good and bad stuff in milk.
