Discovering Sesquiterpenoids: How a Fungus Impacts Plants
Fri Dec 27 2024
Ever heard of a fungus that can both harm and help plants? Well, meet Bipolaris sorokiniana! This fungus produces special chemicals called sesquiterpenoids, which have unique effects on plants. Scientists found these chemicals by using a clever method called molecular networking. They discovered nine different types of these chemicals, with each one having a unique structure. Some of these chemicals can make plants sick, while others can help plants grow bigger and stronger. For instance, a chemical called bipolaric acid has a unique bicycle-like shape, and it can make green foxtails ill. But, other chemicals from the same fungus can boost the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana. Isn't that fascinating? Understanding how these chemicals work might help us figure out how to control plant diseases and improve plant growth.
