Stumbling upon a pile of old silver coins. That's exactly what happened to a group of metal detectorists in southwestern England. They found 2, 584 silver pennies, dating back to the time of the Norman Conquest! This discovery, worth £4. 3 million ($5. 6 million), has become the most valuable treasure find in British history. But why are these coins so special? They tell a story of a turbulent time in England's history. Around 1066-1068, the country was invaded by William the Conqueror during the Norman Conquest. Before that, King Edward the Confessor died without an heir, causing a bit of chaos. The coins show this transition from the Saxon to the Norman rule, with some depicting King Harold II and others showing William I. What makes this hoard unique? It contains twice as many coins from Harold II's reign as previously found. Plus, it was buried during a time of rebellions against William. Experts think it was hidden for safekeeping, maybe during the uprisings in Exeter or when Harold's sons returned from exile. Now, these coins will be on public display at the British Museum in London from November 26. Afterward, they'll head back to museums in southwestern England. The lucky detectorists and the landowner will share the £4. 3 million jackpot!
